TAKA:I WANT

Waste needs a better PR rep. until now, our relationship with waste has been contested and distant.
Taka has two Swahili meanings. First is I WANT and the second is WASTE.
We choose the former. We are redefining our relationship with waste; translate it to value and Not as a thing you discard after consumption.
With tons of waste ending up in our streets and water bodies, causing negative impact to the general quality of life. Numerous attempts are being deployed to curb this menace, from government policies. companies adopting better and sustainable ways to do business. Communities organizing with activities to transform their surroundings.
As Customer Bora we believe that households hold the key to the much-needed shift.
Segregation is not widely practiced at the home level, leaving nothing to work with in completing the life cycle of waste. Ideally, the segregation helps in maintaining the integrity of the waste for proper disposal.
The recyclers are struggling with sustained volume collection and the quality of waste for both organic and nonbiodegradable.
Customer bora approach is redefining the meaning of TAKA and establish value around waste to propagate behavior change on proper waste disposal. Contribute to the transition from linear to circular economy.

FROM HOUSEHOLDS TO THE RIGHT HANDS.

We leverage on technology and community organizing to close the loop of waste collection from households, institution to the recyclers.
Taka Bank web app aggregates the input from the youth groups and individuals. Incentive for being responsible consumers. Measure and recognize brands and organizations for their contribution to the circular economy.

At the beginning of covid 19 effect in Kenya in partnership with Amref, Mama to the rescue and individuals. We were able to train and provide employment for 30 young people.
We fed 3000 vulnerable people with both ready and dry food stuff.

“As a youth growing up in Dandora, we saw the heap of garbage piling up our backyard as a place of discovery. A curious young person intrigued by what we might find next; material for our home-made toys, Airplane leftovers brought by Nas trucks and great place to play hide and seek. oblivious of the lurking danger from the used syringes, sharp objects and the health complication from the ever-burning toxic waste.

My relationship with waste changed when our playground– Kazunye – was swallowed by the towering garbage. This became a metaphor for our lives, there was a sense of abandonment for us. A vulnerable impressionable youth from Dandora. Nobody thought much about us the increase crime rate, drug abuse, early child pregnancy and judicial killing at its highest were testament that no one saw our plight.

A budding rap artist, the response I got from my peers and community towards my talent revealed a truth that is the foundation of who I am today. “I have something to offer”, My voice, solutions, life experience has uniquely placed me to take on the world with confidence.

Across the globe efforts are employed to promote a circular economy. My approach just like the realization as budding artist, this is not waste something to figure out ways to get ride of; this is a resource, raw material that is going to rebuild the future we re imagining..”
